Wicker Park Post Office Expected To Finally Open In December

WICKER PARK β€” A post office branch is slated to open in Wicker Park in December, almost two years since the neighborhood’s previous post office closed.

The Wicker Park Post Office is aiming to open β€œthe first week of December” in the shopping plaza at 1520 N. Damen Ave., United States Postal Service spokesperson Mark Inglett said in an email on Friday. He provided no further details about the location or its offerings.

Wicker Park’s former post office location at 1240 N. Ashland Ave., which included retail service and P.O. boxes,Β closed in early 2025 due to an expired lease.

The storefront has since been converted to a Chick-fil-A,Β which opened in March.

At the time of the closure, the Postal Service said in a media advisory that the agency was looking for a new location within the 60622 area code to β€œmaintain the same level of service” as it had on Ashland.Β

β€œThe relocation project will consist of procuring a suitable substitute location, as close as reasonably possible to the existing location,” the notice said.

It added that β€œretail services will continue at the current post office until all necessary preparations are completed at the new location” β€” something that did not take place, sparking frustration from Wicker Park neighbors who now have to travel to Logan Square, Lincoln Park or elsewhere for shipping and mail services.Β

This spring, USPS signage appeared on the storefront in the shopping plaza at 1520 N. Damen Ave., which is located across the street from Wicker Park’s namesake park. While neighbors at the time expressed excitement that a branch was finally reopening in the area, the Postal Service provided few specifics about the location or an opening timeline.
