Insider REVEALS the Dark Reality of American Justice

In this episode of Legal AF, Ray Brescia speaks to Shaun Ossei-Owusu, who holds the title of presidential professor of law and the University of Pennsylvania’s Carey Law School where he teaches and writes about criminal law, civil rights, legal ethics, the welfare state, and the business of law firms. Brescia and Ossei-Owusu discuss his new book Law on Trial: An Unlikely Insider Reckons with Our Justice System just out from W.W. Norton & Company. In it, Ossei-Owusu argues that the legal system entrenches legal inequality, and that the recent high-profile prosecutions of individuals like former FBI Director James Comey and NY Attorney General Letitia James are symptoms of a larger problem that American prosecutors have too much power generally, and that power is too-often wielded against the poor and the marginalized. He also shares his critiques of Big Law and even public interest lawyers, and has advice for the next generation of lawyers for how to try to correct for these systemic inequalities.
