FRI/18-DECEMBER 27: BEHERE / 1942: A NEW LENS ON THE JAPANESE AMERICAN INCARCERATION Iβm not sure Iβve ever wished to be immersed in an internment camp, but this exhibit feels super-important right now: βCan looking closely at photographs change what we see, know, and feel about this history? Japanese artist Masaki FujihataΒ explores this very question inΒ BeHere / 1942: A New Lens on the Japanese American Incarceration.Β Through immersive installations of historic images and augmented reality experiences, the exhibition brings visitors into the moments of 1942βbefore Japanese Americans in Oakland, San Francisco, and Los Angeles were transported to concentration camps during World War II.β Oakland Museum of California, more info here.
FRI/18-SUN/20: SAN FRANCISCO GREEK FOOD FESTIVAL One of my absolute favorite events of the year. This is an old school culture fest at a church (Greek Orthodox Cathedral of the Annunciation, to be exact), where you buy your food ticket from the nice people in the cafeteria and the proceed to chow down on some of the most amazing Greek food ever, washed some with some wine or ouzo, of course. Then peruse the many Mediterranean wares and dance til your feet hurt to the traditional band and DJ. FRI/18-SUN/20: HOW TO MAKE A PASSIVE DANCE Choreographer San San Kwanβs long-gestating work finally comes to fruition. βIn an era marked by increasing political aggression,Β How to Make a Passive DanceΒ poses a timely question:Β is there value in being passive?Β Asian Americans historically have had a fraught relationship with passivity, but might there be reason for us to reconsider qualities like deference or quietude?Β And how can dance β a medium defined by embodied actionβserve paradoxically as a space for exploring inaction? This quintet investigates dance as a practice of listening and attunement.β The iMPACt Center for Art and Dance in San Francisco, more info here.

SAT/19: LETTERS TO HEAVEN: DOLLY PARTON βYou know all about Jolene but have you heard of Lilβ Andy?Dolly loved a dark Appalachian tragedy and wrote hundreds of B-side hits full of dying children, betrayed wives, murdered lovers, and women falsely committed in asylums. FRI/18 + SAT/19: BURNING DOWN THE HOUSE The Bay Areaβs own Talking Heads tribute band seems to have made great use of that critically acclaimed, loose, weird, hypnotic, and rhythmic palooza of a discography. Itβs loaded with ample hits and deep cuts aplenty. No, David Byrne and his culture-breaking big white suit will not be in attendance at Periβs Tavern in Fairfax on 9/18 or at The Lucky Horseshoe in San Francisco on 9/19.Β Just a committed band, two dedicated venues full of T-Heads singing every damn song, and the community experience. Bringing new songs and maintaining that nervous fonk mystique, Burning Down The House is a tribute band thatβs over the karaoke edge. Grab tix here and here.
