Meet Milwaukee Muslim Leader Salah Sarsour. ICE Detained Him for 80 Days
We speak with Salah Sarsour, a Palestinian community leader in Wisconsin, president of the Islamic Society of Milwaukee and a legal permanent resident of the United States for over 30 years. He faces possible deportation after being arrested in March and detained in an ICE jail for 80 days. The Department of Homeland Security claims Sarsour was arrested for lying on his 1993 green card application about a conviction in Israeli military courts when he was a teenager in the occupied West Bank, but Sarsourβs lawyers say he is being targeted by the federal government over his advocacy for Palestinian human rights. Although a judge ordered Sarsourβs release from detention in June, he still faces deportation proceedings set to resume next week.
βIn ICE detention,β says Sarsour, βit brought to me these bad memories from my childhood, when I was under the Israeli military occupation and Israeli military rules in Palestine.β
