Rep. Al Green confronted the Secretary of Homeland Security over racist imagery, peaceful protest, and what Green called “despicable behavior.” Green grounded the moment in his own Jim Crow experience, invoked Ruby Bridges, and used video evidence to show how the Secretary approached a peaceful protester. When he was interrupted, Green demanded his time back and told anyone trying to interrupt him to “shut up.” The exchange became a direct indictment of behavior Green said raised real concerns about how people of color would be treated under that leadership.
