GOOSE ISLAND βΒ For more than two decades, the Silver Room Block Party has served as a gathering place for Chicagoβs creative community.
The event has brought together music, art, fashion, food and culture. What began in 2002 as a grassroots celebration in an alley behind The Silver Room in Wicker Park evolved into one of the cityβs most anticipated summer traditions, drawing thousands of people from across Chicago before its last event in 2023.
The return of the festival to the Salt Shed this weekend after a two-year hiatus rekindled the tradition.
βIβm proud to say Iβm a Silver Room Block Party lifer,β said Scheherazade Tillet, activist and co-founder of A Long Walk Home. βI havenβt missed a single Block Party in more than 20 years. From Wicker Park to Hyde Park, Bronzeville and now the Salt Shed, Iβve watched it grow from a few hundred people filling the street alley to now thousands gathering.β
For many, the Silver Room Block Party has become a homecoming of sorts.
βThe love of the culture, the vibe β itβs very peaceful. Itβs like a family reunion,β attendee Jamaal Foulks said.
The event featured about 40 performers in genres from house music to Afrobeat and hip-hop, and it included local vendors and fashion shows.
Randle and Marlyn, who have attended the Block Party since its earliest days in the alley behind The Silver Room on North Avenue, said they return time and again because of founder Eric Williams.
βHe has great energy and great intentions,β they said.
The return of the Silver Room Block Party wasnβt just about the music. It was about seeing old friends, making new memories and celebrating the people who continue to shape Chicagoβs creative spirit.
βMore than ever right now, I think [the block party] is needed,β Williams told Block Club in April. βI just want to have a great time and see people have a good time. After a couple years, figuring out a way I could still make it happen is exciting for me.β
The Silver Room Block Partyβs return was scaled back from its South Side iterations, as the Salt ShedβsΒ indoor capacityΒ is 3,000 and the outdoor fairgrounds can hold another 4,000 people.
Ticket sales werenβt enough to save the block party, which ended after its 2023 edition as Williams said it had become too expensive to produce. HeΒ considered shutting down the partyΒ long before its swan song, he said.
βIt went from costing me $500 to $5,000 to $50,000 to $1 millionβ in 2022, Williams said before the last South Side festival. βI was losing money, and no one wanted to donate.β
