Logan Square’s Foodsmart On Armitage Avenue Closed For Remodeling

LOGAN SQUARE — One of Logan Square’s Foodsmart stores surprised neighbors with a sudden closure over the weekend.

But the 24-hour market and convenience store at 2901 W. Armitage Ave. is only temporarily closed for remodeling, an assistant manager said Tuesday. Caution tape was seen blocking off the parking lot where trucks, dumpsters and construction equipment have been since Friday. Workers were seen exiting and entering the space, which is now empty.

The assistant manager, Birjeu, who declined to give his full name, said the location will reopen at the end of July or beginning of August.

Birjeu said the owners decided to remodel the store to add new shelves and appliances and give the space a facelift since its equipment was 25 years old.

Last year, the store was shut down by the city for a few weeks for failing a health inspection that found rodents and inadequate waste disposal. The store’s popular post office also never reopened after ownership changed in 2024.

The new owners needed to apply for their own contract to reopen the post office, but managers at the time blamed the issues on the Postal Service.

Foodsmart passed an inspection in April after a complaint was filed about missing thermometers in coolers, according to health inspection reports. Inspectors gave owners thermometers and instructed them to clean dusty shelves and remove miscellaneous storage items from the back of the store.
