Laila Cunningham fails to defend Farageβs Β£5m gift
On 16 August, Laila Cunningham tried and failed to defend Nigel Farageβs Β£5m βgiftβ scandal:
Watching Laila Cunningham explain Nigel Farages Β£5m bung is wild.
It was 7 minutes so I edited her replies to save your ears.
βWhereβs it going to end? are you going to ask him about every Β£5m he spends?β
Ummmm, YEAH

Given her predictably woeful performance, youβd think it might have been her last appearance onΒ LBC. Instead, she hosted her own slot on the channel that same day.
Doesnβt Reform UK claim itβs not part of the establishment?
Woeful from Laila Cunningham
The following clip fromΒ LBC demonstrates Laila Cunninghamβs inability to give a clear answer. While people are ridiculing her for this, weβre not entirely sure itβs her fault. In our opinion, the issue seems to be that there isnβt a good answer:
βItβs none of peopleβs business how he spends his money.β

Ben Kentish: Whatβs the latest explanation, Leila, as to why he took that Β£5 million gift from a Thai-based crypto billionaire?
Laila Cunningham: Well, we were just discussing it. You know, he is under a massive threat. And I mean, security is so expensive and heβs going to have to pay for it. Listen, he has a mate that has a lot of money. And the mate was like, listen, you donβt feel safe. You donβt have any security. Iβll give you money today.
Ben Kentish: But heβs since gone back on that claim, hasnβt he? He now says it was a gift. It was a reward for delivering Brexit. Was it to pay for security or was it a reward for delivering Brexit?
Laila Cunningham: Well, I mean, two things can be true. You know, he could have really liked what he did for Brexit and said, you know what? That got him close and said, actually, your security.
Ben Kentish: So the moneyβs been spent on security?
Laila Cunningham: One doesnβt cancel out the other. But Nigel is, listen, I mean, he is under constant β itβs a horrible way to live for him.
Ben Kentish: So he spent that money, all of it, or at least all of it that he spent on security?
Laila Cunningham: I donβt know what he spent.
The exchange continued to go around like this. Cunningham would also scold voters for asking these questions, even though she herself admitted she didnβt know if the money was spent on security:
Laila Cunningham is very cross with all of us

As illustrative as the above is, it doesnβt actually get to the core of the problem for Farage.
Declarations
Farage accepted the Β£5m gift from HarborneΒ β a crypto billionaire β in 2024. At the time, heβd said he wouldnβt run in the general election, but this changed after he received the Β£5m. The problem is that after he became an MP, he was supposed to declare any βregistrable benefitsβ from the previous 12 months. FarageΒ did notΒ declare the Β£5m, and now it looks like he was purposefully trying to hide it.
Was this cash from a crypto billionaire potentially relevant to Farageβs subsequent political activities? It definitely could have been, because Farage went on to shill for the crypto industry.Β And as we also reported:
It alsoΒ later emergedΒ that Farage had seemingly agreed to return to politicsΒ beforeΒ accepting the gift, adding to the evidence that the cash lump sum was political. Add to this the fact that Farage reportedly spoke aboutΒ wanting Β£1 million a year to return to politicsΒ (and he then received a Β£5 million gift just before the start of a new five-year parliamentary period).
So the problem isnβt how Farage spent the money; the problem is Farage failed to declare it, and he may have done so to obscure a transactional agreement.
We cannot confirm that Harborne paid Farage to be a crypto-supporting politician; we can say this all could have been ironed out in 2024 if Farage had simply declared the payment.
Air waves
As noted, Laila Cunningham hosted her own three-hour slot on LBC last night:
Sheβs gone from being platformed by the BBC at every given opportunity to now having her own show on the most popular commercial radio station in the UK

Whether you agree with the above point about the Tories or not, itβs a problem that UK media outlets are happy to serve as a soapbox for politicians. These institutions used to challenge people in power. They never did a particularly good job of it, obviously, but it was at least some sort of check.
We donβt know how things will deteriorate from here, but it does seem like βworseβ is always the direction of travel.
