JD Vance says “end times” are an acceptable price for US-Iran war

US Vice President JD Vance has stated in an interview that he is committed to doing “God’s work”, before adding that if that work leads to the “end times”, that would be “okay” by him.

Given his proximity to the US nuclear arsenal, such a blasé assertion is deeply alarming — particularly when considered alongside his emphatic support for the Israeli government and its devastating genocide in Palestine.

JD Vance — Religion as the tool of the oppressor

JD Vance presents himself as a devout Catholic and regularly invokes his faith when defending his political positions. Yet both the late Pope Francis and Pope Leo XIV have heavily criticised the Trump administration on the Iran war, migration, human dignity and the treatment of vulnerable people in the US.

This contradiction is difficult to ignore. A faith that places such profound emphasis on the sanctity of human life should never be reduced to a cynical political tool for justifying cruelty, collective punishment and a complete disregard for civilian life.

And when someone in a position so close to the levers of US military power appears willing to accept the possibility of an “end times” as the inherent price of pursuing his political and ideological goals, the consequences are not merely theological or rhetorical.

In fact, they could be catastrophic for all of us.

JD Vance invoking religion to justify mass-murdering atrocities

The sickening use of religion to justify the cruel murder of civilian populations is a tale as old as time, but its prevalence feels particularly acute today.

For many years, Westerners have been subjected to pervasive propaganda designed to demonise Islam, while Muslim people have routinely been portrayed as extremist religious fanatics who pose a threat to our safety and our “ideals”.

Yet far less attention is given in the mainstream media to the actions of the West and its allies, particularly the way Western leaders invoke virtuous Christian values while committing atrocities abroad or persecuting immigrants seeking refuge and safety.

We have seen the same manipulative tactic for decades within the Zionist project: invoking Judaism and the spectre of antisemitism to defend the existence and actions of the Israeli state. This has helped provide political cover for the ongoing annihilation of Palestinian life, alongside extensive diplomatic and military support from Western governments.

But the blood-soaked claim that the subjugation, apartheid and mass killing of Palestinians is necessary to keep Jews safe is a claim rooted in Zionism, not Judaism.

That distinction matters.

Look to those who stand up for the oppressed

This is demonstrated by the many Jewish people who oppose Zionism, campaign against Israel’s sinister abuses against Palestinians, and protest against the destruction being inflicted in Gaza and the West Bank.

For instance, countless examples have been seen in ultra-Orthodox Jewish groups and individuals who have stood alongside Palestinians in the West Bank and, in some cases, intervened to protect them from violent settlers.

However, opposing the Israeli state, its policies or Zionism is not inherently antisemitic. Nor does condemning atrocities committed against Palestinians require hostility towards Jewish people.

Indeed, the insistence that Judaism and the actions of the Israeli state are synonymous risks doing precisely what antisemitism does: reducing an extraordinarily diverse people and faith to a barbaric political project they do not support.

Religion should never be used as a shield for atrocities. After all, human suffering does not become more acceptable because those inflicting it claim divine justification.

The scourge of Zionism — Christian or Jewish — has fatal ends

Now, it seems that the US is taking a leaf from genocidaire Netanyahu’s book, in using the religion of Christianity to justify deeply concerning extremist rhetoric about bringing on the “end times”.

When you consider that these shameful and sinister words are coming from the Vice President of the only country ever to use nuclear weapons in war, their threat — and their potential impact on all of us — becomes impossible to ignore.

And when they come amid reports that the US is actively considering nuclear strikes against Iran, that alarm becomes deafening.

But the authenticity of their Christian claims is lacking, as indicated by how both the former and current Pope have repeatedly criticised and condemned many of the actions, words and deeds of the far-right MAGA administration in the US.

Likewise, as we see with Jewish peace activists and Orthodox Jews in Palestine, Christian reverends and preachers have stood against the vengeful hate being dished out by the far-right in the UK.

These realities further highlight how nefarious people instrumentalise religion to justify their hate and bloodthirst, whilst others choose to truly embody the teachings of their religion.

Pope Leo XIV just declared the Iran War unjust.

Called it a war crime.

Said it is “not solving anything.”

Then told Americans directly: call Congress. End this war.

Nothing good comes from hate or fear

As many will know, nothing good ever comes from hate. Decisions made through rage-tinted glasses rarely result in just or proportionate action. Instead, hate and rage blind people, making them believe that their own existence can only be safe through the eradication of another.

But if we accept this as true, then the same must be true for our supposed ‘enemies’. And that only feeds a never-ending cycle of war, bloodshed, trauma and misery, while those profiting from the chaos — and from increased arms sales — rub their hands together with glee.

All the while, ordinary people — whether in Iran, Lebanon, Palestine or here in the UK — are the ones who pay the price. That price can mean increased taxes, higher inflation or the loss of sons and daughters serving in the military for those on the side of the oppressors. For the oppressed, it can mean the blanket bombing of villages, communities and towns, murdering countless civilians for financial, egotistical or political gain.

Starmer has recently spoken about how the global order is changing, and it very clearly is. We are living in a world increasingly beholden to tyrants, with fingers hovering over nuclear buttons capable of bringing unimaginable devastation.

This is why it is crucial, now more than ever, for ordinary people to stand together and demand an end to this bloodstained descent into the abyss of morality and humanity.

If you would not accept the justification of a nuclear bomb being used against you, you must not stand by while that same justification is made against another.

Western hypocrisy must end — for all of our sakes.
