CHICAGO — Chicagoans can now access The New York Times — including its news coverage, cooking section and games — for free through the Chicago Public Library.

Anyone who visits a Chicago Public Library branch or has a library card now has complimentary digital access to the Times’ news coverage dating back to 1851, games like Wordle and daily crosswords, recipes, podcasts and its product recommendation site, Wirecutter, the library announced late last month.

Library visitors can view the Times’ website on a public computer at one of the library’s 81 branches or by logging into library wifi on a personal device, according to the library. Chicago Public Library cardholders can also redeem 24-hour codes to access the Times remotely by entering their library card number and PIN on the library’s website. After 24 hours, cardholders can redeem a new code to regain remote access, according to the library.

Chicago residents can get a library card free of cost by visiting any library branch and filling out an application.

More than 5.5 million people visited a Chicago Public Library branch in 2024, and the library issued more than 160,000 new library cards that year, according to system’s 2024 annual report, the most recent available.

An individual All Access Times subscription costs about $30 per month.
