Farage’s £5m sugar daddy has plan to get around donation cap

Nigel Farage has experienced the most scrutiny he’s ever faced over the past few months. The key issue has been the ‘£5m gift’ scandal, which could see him forced to fight a by-election if things don’t go in his favour (a scandal which could even see him facing serious legal consequences).

The Reform leader clearly hasn’t enjoyed the attention, because he’s been ducking journalists for months. And things could get worse too. Because the donor who gave Farage the £5m lump sum has a plan to shower Reform with even more cash:

Harborne can give Reform UK as much cash as he likes, but if all it does is bring negative publicity, he’s not going to get his money’s worth.

Farage rolling in it

Farage accepted the £5m gift from Harborne – a crypto billionaire – in 2024. At the time, he’d said he wouldn’t run in the general election, but this changed after he received the £5m. The problem is that after he became an MP, he was supposed to declare any ‘registrable benefits’ from the previous 12 months. Farage did not declare the £5m, and now it looks like he was purposefully trying to hide it.

As reported by the Times, Harborne hasn’t just donated to Farage; he’s also donated to Reform. Since 2025, he’s given the party £15m. And, that’s not including the £5m ‘gift’ to Farage. He would have been capped at £100,000 per year moving forwards because he was foreign-based, but now he’s registered to vote in the UK again. This raises a couple of questions:

• Why wasn’t he registered as a UK voter if he’s so interested in UK politics?
• Why are we letting foreign-based donors pump any cash into UK political parties?

People have their suspicions as to what Harborne wants. Here’s what Reform Party UK Exposed said:

Harborne has been donating to the party since 2025, to the tune of £12m (and to other Farage parties and causes since 2019).

Farage stated in December 2025 “I’ve not promised him a single thing in return for his donation. Does he want anything from me? No. Absolutely nothing in return at all,”

He then said…

“He just happens to think that we’ve not made the most of Brexit, that we’re not getting into the 21st Century technologies.”

So Farage is admitting he’s been lobbied by Chris Harborne, the crypto entrepreneur who he speaks to monthly around “21st Century technologies”.

Out of nowhere, Farage who previously was stating cash is king and despite claiming he was in to crypto in 2020 had not advocated publicly for it.

His only tweet with an opinion on it was in 2022 where he criticised Biden for taking donations from… a tech entrepreneur (Sam Bankman-Fried, jailed for wire fraud).

Then magically Reform UK produce a Cryptoassets and Digital Finance Bill, with no prior advocacy in May 2025. Reform UK then accepts donations in crypto.

Of course, nothing to do with Nigel Farage speaking to a major stakeholder in Tether monthly.

Paradox

In politics, money can buy a lot of things. Among the things it can’t buy, however, is a brand new reputation for a politician who’s tarnished theirs.

The more money Farage accepts from this guy, the worse things will look for him, and yet he clearly loves money.

What a predicament.
