Support the stories that other outlets miss

Growing up, I thought Iβd never leave my hometown of Minneapolis. But then I decided to become a journalist β and I spent nearly six years reporting elsewhere, moving from Phoenix to Iowa City to Madison to Milwaukee, before finally returning home this fall.
MinnPost brought me home. Itβs an organization that, in our ever-saturated Twin Cities media market, invests more than its peers into reporters who put local communities first.
Iβve worked within corporate media: I know how big news companies cut corners on journalistic quality in pursuit of publishing as many stories as possible. We donβt do that at MinnPost, largely because our nonprofit funding model that requires an additional layer of accountability to our readers.

Our funding structure also allows us to report stories that other outlets miss.
Iβm an example: As of June 1, I began a year-long project in partnership with a national nonprofit called OpenCampus to pursue investigative journalism focused on Minnesotaβs two-year college system.
Why does that topic deserve a year of investigation, you might ask? Because hundreds of thousands of Minnesota students attend two-year colleges. As βopen accessβ institutions, they play a key role in affording the benefits of higher education to everyone. But they are mostly an afterthought in the mainstream media, both locally and nationally, leaving major holes in accountability and oversight.
Iβm only a few weeks into my reporting, but I can tell you thereβs a lot to write about. Stay tuned.
We need community support to make this work possible. Please consider making a donation today.
